Broadway at the Beach is a shopping center and entertainment complex located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Broadway at the Beach is owned and operated by Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc. The $250 million attraction is set on in the heart of Myrtle Beach and features three theaters, over 20 restaurants and over 100 specialty shops as well as attractions, nightclubs, and hotels, all surrounding the Lake Broadway. Broadway at the Beach receives upwards of 14 million visitors annually. ==History== Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc., which developed and owns Broadway at the Beach, announced plans for the entertainment complex in 1993. Construction began the next year, with a grand opening on July 4, 1995, in an opening ceremony attended by officials such as Representative Strom Thurmond and Governor Mark Sanford. Hard Rock Cafe and Palace Theatre were the first big anchors in the complex. The first construction stage built a horseshoe from Celebrity Square to the “Generations at Play” fountain on the east side of the complex. After the initial stage was successful, officials kept adding stores, attractions and a hotel. The popularity of the entertainment complex led the city to pave Robert M. Grissom Parkway - formerly Central Parkway – and allowed for a “center city redevelopment TIF” for improvements to Booker T. Washington area infrastructure. The popularity of Broadway at the Beach also spurred new development along U.S. 17 Bypass. In November 1996, a Planet Hollywood opened across the street from the main complex in a district named "Lakeshore at Broadway"; thousands attended a grand opening party in 1997 featuring celebrities such as Bruce Willis, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Will Smith and others. In October 2010, Legends in Concert held its last show in nearby Surfside Beach before moving to the Broadway at the Beach location in March of 2011. WonderWorks, described as "a science attraction housed in an upside-down building", opened April 4, 2011. On April 1, 2012, Backstage Mirror Maze and The Vault Laser Maze opened. The maze attraction recalls an actual bank robbery in Times Square from the 1930s.
